MBC project background

While the untact platform economy is being revitalized due to Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the government is promoting various businesses to grow the two-wheel electric delivery vehicles market. As an effort for such policy, Seoul concluded an agreement with the Korea Electric Vehicles Drivers Association to accelerate the conversion of two-wheel delivery vehicles to electric vehicles as they are closely related to massive greenhouse gas emissions and people’s lives. The amount of conversion is 62,000 (\186B if each vehicle costs \3M) and 35,000 vehicles(About \105B) will be prioritized for conversion.

MBC Foundation has built close ties to the drivers association and decided to operate a project of investing in the manufacturer with high potential of becoming the supplier for the conversion to electric vehicles. The project is stable as there is determinate demand for the supply, and as the two-wheel vehicle market grows each day, it is expected to create huge profit by occupying the lead of the electric two-wheel vehicle market that grows each day.


Sales of Electricity Two-wheel Vehicle

E-motorcycles and scooters are still expensive, but their price is slowly changing. According to Garrett Nelson, analyst, CFRA Research, the price of lithium-ion batteries was reduced by 85% during the last 10 years, and the price (of electric vehicles) would be as low as gas-powered motorcycles in the next 10 years. Nelson said the stadium is wide open, and added Honda, Yamaha, Harley-Davidson has taken 2/3 of the motorcycle market of the world, and each of them is developing e-motorcycles.

CNBC criticized that Harley-Davidson and Honda are dominating manufacturers with big plans in electric motorcycle and said massive companies like Hero Motors and Bajaj Auto of India, electricity startups like Zero Motorcycles and Energetica are developing electricity two-wheel vehicles.

Global Market Size

According to market analyzer  Global Market Insight, the size of the electric two-wheel vehicle(e-motorcycles and scooters) market is beyond $30B in 2020, and it will grow by about 4% of CAGR between 2021 and 2027. Their support was that the growth of the industry is fueled by the heightening awareness of air pollution and the demand for noise reduction. The global trend of the increase of government’s investment in electric two-wheel vehicles, too, is the reason the market demand thereof increases as well.
For example, in March 2019, the government of India assigned $1.4B for the fast adoption and manufacturing plan of electric two-wheel vehicles to encourage the introduction of electric two-wheel vehicles.
The research institute added that low operation and maintenance costs as other major factors for accelerating the growth of electric two-wheel vehicles. Electric two-wheel vehicles have lesser parts compared to gasoline or diesel two-wheel vehicles, making fuel expenses and maintenance expenses comparably lower

The core battery of the business

The competition of electric two-wheel vehicles is on the batteries. How fast it charges and how long it lasts is the key. Electric two-wheel vehicles use the battery as their energy source and the usual secondary batteries used are lead-storage batteries and lithium-ion batteries. In Korea, the batteries need high operating voltage and high energy density for the performance that suits Korea’s geographical characteristics, so Lithium-ion batteries are used as they have advantages. Lithium-ion batteries use a constant voltage method like conventional lead-storage batteries so with the additional circuit inside the batteries pack, a conventional compressed battery charger can be used. Current electric two-wheel vehicles are manufactured in battery-recharging models and battery-replacing models. The time it takes battery-recharging models to fully charge is at most 4 hours and the driving distance with full battery is more or less than 100km; this is insufficient for electric two-wheel vehicle users who deliver/transport products to various places in cities. Thus battery-replacing models are expected to take the lead.

Business Opportunity Analysis

Different aspects of electric two-wheel vehicles were explored above. The rise of electric two-wheel vehicles was an effort for eco-friendly policy to reduce air pollution. For the success of such a policy, the government is giving subsidy support to grow the electric two-wheel vehicle market.
However, there are undeniably many problems not resolved in the policy process, and the companies that can resolve such problems seemed to get new business opportunities.
The businesses that cheap Chinese products are acquiring domestic subsidies, conversion of delivery vehicles to electric two-wheel vehicles, and related businesses seemed to be great opportunities.

MBC Ecosystem Basis

As the number of delivery services increase due to COVID-19, the number of two-wheel vehicles rapidly increased as well. The number of two-wheel vehicles increased by 20,000 per year on average for the last 5 years, and especially in the first half of 2020, it increased by about 43,000 compared to the same time of the previous year. This raised issues such as carbon gas emissions and noise complaints in the residential areas

To match the effort of the government’s policy to convert two-wheel delivery vehicles to electric vehicles, the project MBC foundation this time is carried out together with corporate body Korea Electric Vehicles Drivers Association (“Drivers Associaton”) that would take the biggest role.

Seoul and the Ministry of Environment

Seoul and the Ministry of Environment have signed agreements with related organizations and companies to promote the conversion of two-wheel delivery vehicles that are closely related to massive greenhouse gas emissions and people’s lives to electric vehicles; the goal is to change 100% 35,000 two-wheel delivery vehicles by 2025, which the budget has been secured, executed, and promoted.

Korea Electric Vehicles Drivers Association

Korea Electric Vehicles Drivers Association, the corporate body that is signing the agreement with Seoul and the Ministry of Environment will develop exclusive electric two-wheel vehicles models for delivery services and standard charger thereof, introduction, development, and supply of batteries. Verification and related education for delivery carriers are carried out by them as well. .

This organization works for arranging investors and financial organizations for the preparation of factories and manufacturing equipment for electric two-wheel vehicles manufacturers to smoothly and effectively carry out the production of electric two-wheel vehicles..

Electric two-wheel vehicles

This is the manufacturer that signed an agreement with the Korea Electric Vehicle Drivers Association that manufactures electric two-wheel vehicles with the supply of batteries from the supplier and supplies the products to the delivery carriers verified by the Drivers Association.

Imports batteries with an excellent performance from overseas or directly manufactures them to supply them to electric two-wheel vehicles manufacturers.

Expansion and Development of
MBC Ecosystem

MBC foundation’s current project set the goal to prioritize the manufacture and sales of 35,000 electric two-wheel vehicles(\105B if each vehicle costs \3M), which is the goal of Seoul, carried by the electric two-wheel vehicles manufacturers with a manufacturing facility funded by the foundation. Seoul has a plan to supply a total of 62,000 electric two-wheel vehicles in a few years. During this process, most of the supply will be made by the manufacturer MBC foundation invested in with close cooperation with the Drivers Association. Also, the other local governments will benchmark the model of Seoul, and the foundation has a plan to supply electric two-wheel vehicles to other areas.
In a long term, the foundation is also strategically considering the acquisition of the lead from battery share station and standardization business that the government promotes with policies to create a stable profit for the company.

Battery Swapping System (BSS)

Due to battery problems, electric two-wheel vehicles lack acceleration, speed, and driving distance. One of the solutions to resolve such issue is securing charging infrastructure, and ‘Battery Sharing Station(BSS)’ arose as a solution. It is a vending-machine type facility that can charge batteries at any time, and the government, domestic and private companies are on-station construction businesses. Delivery service companies are keeping their eye on the expansion project of stations and searching for electric two-wheel vehicles

Standardization of electric Battery

After the stations are installed, there will be competition on standardization. When a vehicle runs out of fuel, it can get them at any gas station in the whole nation. But electric two-wheel vehicles can only get certain batteries the manufacturer set. Batteries take different roles including power supply.

MBC  Battery changing station

MBC Foundation has concluded an agreement with an electric two-wheel vehicles manufacturer to standardize and supply electric two-wheel vehicles batteries to continue to stably increase the demand for batteries MBC foundation manufactures, and KT Links is working to replace currently rather useless phone booths with electric two-wheel vehicles battery replace stations for smooth battery replacements and enhancement of convenience.

This will allow electric two-wheel vehicles drivers to charge their batteries with industrial electricity instead of family electricities for comparably cheaper charged batteries.

The number of MBC foundation batteries users is expected to reach 200,000 in the future, and the sales of batteries and charging system usage fees will draw out steep profit graphs.
